Shymkent is one of the leading industrial and economic centers of Kazakhstan. The city has industrial enterprises of non-ferrous metallurgy, mechanical engineering, chemical, oil refining and food industries.

Despite the fact that Shymkent does not have a resource base, this region is a major center for the development of industry and trade. According to statistics, as of March 1, 2022, 26,907 enterprises are registered in the city, of which 120 are large and 303 are medium, and 26,484 are small. In January-February 2022, the city of Shymkent produced industrial products (including small, auxiliary enterprises, the household sector) at current prices by 134.7 billion tenge, which was 101.8% compared to 2021.
In the manufacturing industry, products worth 110.6 billion tenge were produced, the physical volume index compared to 2021 amounted to 101.5%.
Growth in industrial production is observed in the production of rubber and plastic products, in the light industry, in the production of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations, and in the production of finished metal products, except for machinery and equipment.
In electricity supply, gas, steam supply and air conditioning, by January-February 2022, 197.8 million kW were generated for the needs of the city. hours of electricity, which by the level of 2020. amounted to 108.7%; accordingly, 498.2 thousand Gcal (92.3%) were supplied to thermal energy.

The sown area of agricultural crops (preliminary) in the city of Shymkent in 2021 decreased by 2.6 thousand hectares or by 9.2% and amounted to 25.3 thousand hectares, including 10.8 thousand hectares of agricultural enterprises, individual entrepreneurs and peasant or farm enterprises - 12.5 thousand hectares, households - 2.0 thousand hectares.
Compared to the level of 2020, the yield of grains (including rice) and legumes in weight after processing decreased by 22.2% and amounted to 8.6 q/ha. The year turned out to be more fruitful for corn (maize) (yield growth by 1.8 times), dried leguminous vegetables (by 17.6%).
Of the total sown area, 10.2 thousand hectares or 40.4% were sown with cereals (including rice) and legumes, 6.3 thousand hectares or 25.0% with fodder crops, 3.3 thousand hectares with oilseeds or 13.0%, vegetables and melons, root crops and tubers - 2.5 thousand hectares or 9.9%.
As of January 1, 2022, compared to the same date in 2021, in all categories of farms, the number of cattle decreased by 0.8% and amounted to 75.6 thousand heads, horses - by 3.2% and 13.7 thousand heads, respectively , sheep by 19.4% and 71.1 thousand heads, goats by 6% and 3.1 thousand heads, pigs by 13.1% and 3.3 thousand heads, birds by 12.7% and 954, 8 thousand heads.
In January-December 2021, all types of livestock and poultry were slaughtered or sold for slaughter in live weight 15430.6 tons, which is 6.7% more than in the corresponding period of 2020. The production of cow's milk increased by 3.3% and amounted to 48597.7 tons. The production of chicken eggs decreased by 4.1% and amounted to 155369.1 thousand pieces.
According to the categories of farms in Shymkent, the egg production of laying hens was 319 pieces, and the milk productivity of cows was 1853 kg.
